Local Government History

For decades prior to 1995, the rural area around Lac La Biche and Plamondon was part of Improvement District #18 (ID #18).

  • In 1993, the provincial government announced sweeping changes which would affect the future governance of unincorporated rural municipalities including ID #18 South.
  • The majority of former ID #18 South was annexed by the Municipal District of Bonnyville # 87 (MD of Bonnyville). Parts of ID #18 South were further taken over by Athabasca County, Smoky Lake County and the Municipal District of Vermillion River.
  • In 1998, the Province chose to split the MD of Bonnyville into two entities. The eastern entity remained as the MD of Bonnyville and the western entity, including the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range, became the newly created Lakeland County as of July 1, 1998. Up to this point, the Town of Lac La Biche was and remained incorporated as a town, and the Village of Plamondon remained incorporated as a village.
  • In 2002 the former Village of Plamondon dissolved and became part of Lakeland County.
  • In 2006, discussion arose between the Town of Lac La Biche and Lakeland County regarding the possibility of amalgamating. This ultimately lead to a vote on April 30, 2007, in which a non-binding plebiscite was held in the Town of Lac La Biche and Lakeland County to determine whether or not the residents were in favour of amalgamation.
  • Residents of the former Town of Lac La Biche voted 93% in favour of amalgamation, while 53% of Lakeland County residents supported amalgamation.
  • On August 1, 2007, the municipal district we know as Lac La Biche County was formed from the amalgamation of the former Town of Lac La Biche and the former Lakeland County.

While the area has undergone many changes in governance, the area has still flourished and continues to do so today.
