Mandatory agricultural education resolution passes at Rural of Municipalities Alberta meeting
Agriculture has historically been and continues to be a major economic force and employer in Alberta. However, because most Albertans now grow up in urban environments away from farms, we don’t have the same knowledge of how livestock, crops, and other agricultural commodities are produced.
That’s why, at last fall's meeting of the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA), Lac La Biche County proposed bringing mandatory agricultural education to all schools in Alberta. The County’s resolution passed with overwhelming majority support. The resolution was also endorsed at the Agricultural Services Board’s Provincial Conference.
RMA will spend the next two years working with rural communities, Alberta Education, the Alberta Teachers’ Association, and school boards to request mandatory agricultural education in schools.
