Senate and Referendum Election Proclamation

The Alberta Senate Election is to be held October 18, 2021, in conjunction with the 2021 Municipal Election, and is for the electors of Lac La Biche County, Beaver Lake Cree Nation and Heart Lake First Nation. The Alberta Senate Election is being held to select 3 Senate Nominees, according to the Alberta Senate Election Act, who may be summoned to the Senate of Canada, for the purpose of filling a vacancy or vacancies relating to Canada.

The Alberta Referendum Act allows the Lieutenant Governor in Council to order a referendum to constitutional questions and requires a referendum before the Legislative Assembly can vote on any resolution authorizing an amendment to the Constitution of Canada. The following questions are being asked of electors under the Referendum Act:

  • Should section 36(2) of the Constitution Act, 1982-Parliament and the government of Canada’s commitment to the principle of making equalization payments-be removed from the constitution?
  • Do you want Alberta to adopt year-round Daylight Savings Time, which is summer hours, eliminating the need to change our clocks twice a year?
