Tuesday, June 17, 2025 was a momentous and historic day in Lac La Biche County, as the ceremonial pipe was lifted and the Treaty 6, Métis Settlements and Métis flags were raised in ceremony alongside Elders, leaders of Beaver Lake Cree Nation, Heart Lake First Nation, Whitefish Lake First Nation 128, Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement, Kikino Métis Settlement, the Métis Settlements General Council, Lac La Biche Métis District 19, Knowledge Holders, Portage College representatives and members of our community.
The raising of the Treaty 6 flag and the two distinct Métis flags affirms our commitment to the Indigenous peoples of this land; they are a visible sign of our ongoing commitment to truth, learning, listening and collaborating to build strong and mutually respectful relationships.
We would also like to thank our cultural performers for sharing their gifts with us, the Lac La Biche Canadian Native Friendship Centre for preparing the meal, and The Métis Man for capturing photo and video memories of this extraordinary occasion.
